Sephora - If you do not already know about this store (there are branches in the US) this is a must see. Sephora is the equivalent of a high end beauty supply supermarket. The best thing is that you can readily pick and choose from different lines (Shadow by Urban Decay, Mascara by English Ideas) It can be less intimidating than the Department store floors and you are encouraged to try the products.
